What is a RADAR key?
Many accessible toilets are kept locked so they stay clean and free for the people who need them. They open with a RADAR key, a single standard key that works across the country. If a toilet on Spend a Penny needs one, we show a note on its page.
How the National Key Scheme works
The RADAR key is part of the National Key Scheme, run by Disability Rights UK. One key opens around 10,000 locked accessible toilets across the UK, at places like car parks, railway stations, shopping centres, pubs and visitor centres. You do not need a different key for each one.
Who it is for
The scheme is for disabled people and anyone with a health condition that means they need to use an accessible toilet. There is no formal proof to show when you use the key. Some sellers ask you to confirm that you are eligible when you buy one.
Where to get one
You can buy a genuine RADAR key from Disability Rights UK or from many local councils, usually for about £5. If you are exempt from VAT because of a disability, the price is a little lower. It is worth keeping the key with you on days out, as locked accessible toilets are common at parks, beaches and town centres.
