These terms apply when you use Spend a Penny. By using the site, you agree to them. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the service.

What Spend a Penny is

Spend a Penny is a free service that helps you find public toilets in the UK and see information about them, such as status, opening hours, cost and accessibility. It’s a helpful guide built from open data and community reports. It isn’t an official register and we don’t own or operate the toilets it lists.

Accuracy and your own judgement

We work hard to keep the information accurate and fresh, but we can’t guarantee it. Toilets close, open, change their hours and lose facilities, sometimes without notice. Listings, including accessibility details, may be incomplete or out of date. Please treat the information as a guide and check before you rely on it, especially if you have specific accessibility needs. You use the service and act on its information at your own discretion.

Contributing reports, confirmations and photos

When you submit a report, confirmation, suggested update or photo, you confirm that:

• the information is accurate and offered in good faith;
• you have the right to share anything you upload, and any photo is your own;
• your photo doesn’t show identifiable people, vehicle number plates or other personal information;
• your contribution isn’t unlawful, offensive, misleading or a breach of anyone’s rights.

You keep ownership of what you submit, but you grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to store, display and use it to run and improve Spend a Penny (for example, showing your report or photo on a toilet’s page). We may review, edit or remove any contribution, and we don’t have to publish everything submitted.

Acceptable use

Please don’t:

• submit false, spammy or abusive content;
• scrape, bulk-download or harvest the site’s data, or hammer it with automated requests;
• try to break, overload, or gain unauthorised access to the service;
• use the service unlawfully or to infringe anyone’s rights.

Our content and the underlying data

The Spend a Penny name, design and original content are ours. The toilet data is drawn from open sources and remains subject to their licences: the Great British Public Toilet Map (CC BY 4.0), OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL), and Ordnance Survey open data (Crown copyright). Those sources are credited across the site.

Other services we link to

The site links to and uses third-party services, such as map and directions providers. We’re not responsible for their content or their terms, which apply when you use them.

Availability and changes

We may change, suspend or withdraw any part of the service, and update these terms, at any time. We’ll post changes here with a new date. The service is provided “as is”, without warranties, to the extent the law allows.

Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we’re not liable for any loss arising from your use of, or reliance on, the service or its information, including a toilet being closed, unavailable or different from its listing. Nothing in these terms limits liability that can’t be limited by law, such as for death or personal injury caused by negligence.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and disputes are subject to the courts of England and Wales.
