Surf beaches, high cliffs and the wildest stretch of the South West Coast Path — Woolacombe, Croyde, Saunton, Ilfracombe and Hartland — with a genuinely generous council behind most of it. North Devon Council keeps its coastal blocks open 24 hours a day, year-round: the Red Barn block at Woolacombe, two in Croyde, five around Ilfracombe from the Pier to Bicclescombe Park, and the Kiln car park at Combe Martin, almost all with RADAR-keyed accessible cubicles and no charge.

South of the Taw–Torridge estuary, Torridge District Council keeps 24-hour blocks at Hartland and at Stoke, the village by the church a mile inland from Hartland Quay — and you should use them, because the coast path from Hartland Quay to Bude is fifteen severe, glorious miles with nothing official in between. It's the remotest toilet gap on the whole north coast.

Check the map before a surf day or a big cliff walk; the honeypot beaches are well covered, but the path between them mostly isn't.

Where the gaps are: Hartland Quay to Bude — around fifteen miles of the toughest coast path in England with no public facilities. Go at Stoke or Hartland Square first, and don't count on anything until Bude.
